Composer & Director

Mattis Appelqvist

French-Danish composer and double bassist, his work sits at the intersection of jazz, cinema, and electroacoustic music. Trained on the double bass from childhood, he studied at Brown University (USA) before specializing in composition for the screen through the international InMICS master’s program at the conservatories of Bologna and Ghent.

His career is marked by several international collaborations: his first film, El Tiempo de las Luciérnagas, won the Golden Gate Award in San Francisco, while recent composition projects include the animated film Ser Semilla (2025 Ariel Award nominee) and the documentary Mariinka (Audience Award at CPH:DOX 2026).

Now based in Brussels, he co-founded Lighthouse Labs, a studio dedicated to sound creation and post-production. There, he composes for film, performing arts, and immersive installations, including Here Be Monsters (2023) and Wasteland (2025).
